June Regional Jobs Report: Impressive Year-Over-Year Improvements

BLS Regional Jobs Report

Year-over-year unemployment figures continued to trend in the right direction in June. No region’s unemployment rate was significantly different from the national average, but three regions did see an appreciable year-over-year unemployment rate decrease. Month-over-month unemployment rates were stable in forty-three states and the District of Columbia, lower in one state, and higher in six states.

IT Sector Unemployment Lower Than National Rate

The 2.7 percent unemployment rate in the tech sector is still more than 2 percentage points lower than the national unemployment rate. This continues to reinforce the strength of the tech industry.

These are states that added the most IT jobs in June:

  • California: +11,300 IT jobs added
  • Ohio: +6,900 IT jobs added
  • Virginia: +5,100 IT jobs added
  • Georgia: +4,900 IT jobs added
  • Michigan: +4,200 IT jobs added

These are the states with the greatest year-over-year growth in IT jobs and their overall year-over-year job growth:

  • California: +93,700 IT jobs added and +461,100 total jobs added since June 2015
  • Florida: +48,400 IT jobs added and +244,500 total jobs added since June 2015
  • Georgia: +34,200 IT jobs added and +123,200 total jobs added since June 2015
  • Michigan: +27,500 IT jobs added and +91,500 total jobs added since June 2015
  • North Carolina: +26,200 IT jobs added and +89,100 total jobs added since June 2015

Thousands Added to Labor Force in California, Georgia

Compared with May, thirty states saw an improvement or remained stagnant in their unemployment rates. California and Georgia saw the most significant additions to their civilian labor force, adding 24,236 and 12,736 to their employment force month-over-month.

Here’s a snapshot of June’s regional unemployment figures:

  • Northeast: 4.8% (0% from May to June, -0.5% year-over-year)
  • South: 4.7% (-0.1% from May to June, -0.6% year-over-year)
  • West: 5.2% (+0.1% from May to June, -0.6% year-over-year)
  • Midwest: 4.7% (-0.1% from May to June, -0.1% year-over-year)
