Green Meets Geek on Saint Patrick’s Day!

by Modis on March 13, 2012

Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday of celebration, revelry and pride in all things Irish. The best part about Saint Patrick’s day, however, is that you don’t need to be Irish to get in on the celebration. People of all cultures, religions and other denominations can put on their favorite green gear, dust off their shamrocks and raise a green beer in a toast to Saint Patrick.

At Modis, we plan to celebrate in our own way – the geek way – and we hope you can celebrate with us. Here’s how you can put a little geek in your green all day long.

Start the day by brushing up on your Irish. The Enjoy Irish app features interactive lessons complete with recorded conversations, written translations and a related comic. If nothing else, you’ll enjoy the comics.

Get in touch with your geeky green roots: What better way to enjoy the day ahead than by learning about all the geeks who came before. After all, we are but the latest in a long line of geeks celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day. Wired compiled a list of the 10 greatest Irish geeks in history. Check it out for yourself.

Pick up some special green gifts for that special someone in your life: Sure, Valentine’s Day was last month, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show you care. Trade in the heart-shaped chocolates for some green-clad candies with a St. Patrick’s Day gift basket or tell the one you love how you really feel with a glowing green glowheart (available from Etsy).

Host an Irish movie marathon: Have some friends over for some Irish-inspired flicks. There’s something for everyone; if you want a beloved dramedy, check out The Commitments, a classic film about about down-and-out Dubliners who form a soul band. If you want to laugh, pop in a DVD of Waking Ned Devine, which follows the hilarious hijinks of an Irish community that tries to claim the winnings of a recently deceased lottery winner. If you have an action-craving crowd who doesn’t mind a little violence and a little William Dafoe, The Boondock Saints may be for you. Finally, for the ultimate cinematic geek experience, check out The Secret of The Kells, which combines stunning anime, an enchanted forest filled with fairies, plenty of mythology and a heartwarming story about a young medieval hero.

Kill free time with Angry Birds, Saint Patrick’s style: Unleash red bird, yellow bird, blue bird and the rest of the Angry Birds gang in a green-hued world with Angry Birds Seasons.

Gear up for a big green night out. Put on your favorite green digs (we recommend this shirt, which not only shows your Saint Patty’s pride, but also shows the world just how smart you are), grab your personalized green beer mug and find a local pub serving up a bit of Irish flavor with the Guinness Pub Finder app.

Make your place the place to be green: If the bar scene is not for you, transform your home into a different kind of scene. Deck out your living room in the style of some science fiction classics. Here is a list of made-up pubs – The Raven from Indiana Jones, The Prancing Pony from the Lord of the Rings and the bar from Star Trek are just some of the settings you can use as inspiration. If you just want to keep your party in the realm of reality, play DJ with the Radio Ireland (Apple) and Ireland Radio Recorder (Android) apps. After all, Irish music isn’t limited to U2, Dropkick Murphys and the Riverdance.

Unwind for the night: Your celebration doesn’t have to end when the party is over. Go to bed in comfort and style with Saint Patrick’s Day pajamas, available for men and women.

From the sunup to sundown, all of us at Modis wish you a very happy, safe and geeky Saint Patrick’s Day!  Or as the Irish would say, ” As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction.”

Your “digs” are where you live, not what you wear. You may have meant “togs”? Also, I do wish that we’d stop being represented by four leaf clovers. It’s a three leaved Shamrock that’s symbolic of Ireland, the legend being that St. Patrick (Padraig) taught the holy trinity to the pagans using it as a mnemonic device.

St Patricks Day is my chance to get my Italian wife to drink green beer, bake some soda bread, listen to some bagpipes and watch Waking Ned Devine after the kids are down. She even has a shamrock on her blackberry case. Slante!

I am going to be heavy into the green this St. Patricks day. Probably spending green for a shamrock shake. Spending more green on my lawn mower that I have to use over a month sooner than expected. Mowing the green grass on my lawn that has started growing due to the warm weather we are having. Followed with a little green beer and some great chicken wings at QuakerState.

I’ll be celebrating st Patricia day this year for the first time in my life (I’m 21). I never got into it before this year, but you guys have given me some great inspiration and motivation. And let’s be honest, I couldn’t legally enjoy a green beer until this year anyway so tomorrow perfect. Great blog entry! Keep up the good work!

As a full blood Irish woman, I love this holiday. 🙂 I’ll prob start with dressing my family in green, throw a bike ride into the mix to “go green”, have a beer or 3, and some soda bread. To end the day I will catch up on Irish tales on my new Kindle Fire 😉 happy holidays!

My husband and I are going to dress up in green and party down at a reggae night. Then we are going to crash out 😉 at a beautiful beach front hotel.
