For those of us who live in first-world countries, and metropolitan areas in particular, it’s a little too easy to take the marvels of modern convenience for granted. We’re so plugged in and wrapped up in the latest tech innovations that the mere thought of having to wait more than a few seconds for a webpage to load seems abhorrent. But what about those counties and locales around the world that don’t even have access to the Internet to begin with?
Google has big plans for expanding the reach of the Internet far out into the most remote and rural areas of the globe that remain untouched by the modern convenience of the web. This new innovation is a nebulous giant balloon-shaped object, that we call, Project Loon.
What is Project Loon?
The concept behind Project Loon is simple: launch a network of reinforced balloons loaded with solar power cells and the tech needed to deliver the Internet to anywhere in the globe, regardless of location or technological infrastructure. This deployed network would float approximately 20km above the earth in the stratosphere, twice as high as commercial aircraft fly and travel where needed by engaging with the stratified wind currents. Each balloon, in theory, would be capable of delivering Internet connectivity, through LTE, to an area that’s roughly 40km in diameter.
The Importance Behind it All
Beyond bringing web access to the two-thirds of the population that doesn’t currently have it, this innovative project could prove invaluable in bringing society back online following times of catastrophic disaster. It’s an ambitious project for sure, but the mission to provide “balloon powered Internet for everyone” is certainly a fascinating prospect. It’s been labeled one of the most important developments coming out of Google’s special projects department.
Convenient Interaction Worldwide
It could also open the channels of communication between large swaths of the global population who have little to no opportunity to connect otherwise. This could pave the way for new globe-spanning partnerships and social developments.
Pulling off such an ambitious project is no small feat, but Google’s forward thinking approach could spell big things for technological expansion worldwide in a way that’s more economical and ecologically sustainable.
