April Jobs Report: Unemployment Rate Continues to Drop

2016 national jobs reportThe unemployment rate continued to drop in April, decreasing by 0.1 percent to 4.4 percent. A total of 211,000 jobs were created during the month, more than double the amount of jobs created in March.

Unemployment Rate Declines for Fourth Consecutive Month

April’s 0.1 percent drop in unemployment rate to 4.4 percent marked the fourth consecutive month of decrease in the U.S. unemployment rate. The rate has declined 0.6 percent over the year, decreasing the number of unemployed by 854,000. The average number of jobs created averaged 174,000 per month over the past three months.

Revisions to previous months: The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for February was revised from +219,000 to +232,000, and the change for March was revised from +98,000 to +79,000.

Wages Continue to Rise

Over the past year, average hourly earnings have risen 65 cents (2.5 percent). The 7 cent raise in April brought the average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls to $26.19.

Steady Gain of Tech Jobs

The professional and business services sector added 39,000 jobs in April, with 23,100 of those jobs attributed to professional and technical technical services.

The specific areas seeing the most growth in the professional and technical services sector include:

  • Management and technical consulting services (+7,700 jobs in April 2017)
  • Accounting and bookkeeping services (+5,200 in April 2017)
  • Other professional and technical services (+4,500 jobs in April 2017)

The unemployment rate for professional and technical services was unchanged in April at 3.0 percent.
