August Jobs Report: 40,000 New Tech Jobs

national jobs reportThe unemployment rate changed slightly in August by 0.1 percent to 4.4 percent. A total of 156,000 jobs were created throughout the month.

Unemployment Rate Remains Stable

August saw only a minor shift in the unemployment rate to 4.4 percent. Since the month of April, the national unemployment rate has remained stable around 4.3 to 4.4 percent. Over the past year, the rate has declined 0.3 percent. The average number of jobs created is 196,000 per month over the past three months. So far during 2017, employment growth has averaged 176,000 per month.

Rising Wages

In August, hourly earnings for employees on private nonfarm payrolls increased 3 cents to $26.39. Throughout the past 12 months, hourly earnings have increased by 2.5 percent or 65 cents.

More Tech Jobs Added in August

The professional and business services sector added 40,000 jobs in August, with 22,000 of those jobs attributed to professional and technical services.

The specific areas seeing the most growth in the professional and technical services sector include:

  • Computer systems design and related services (+8,000 jobs in August 2017)
  • Other professional and technical services (+4,400 in August 2017)
  • Architectural and engineering services (+4,400 jobs in August 2017)

The unemployment rate for professional and technical services shifted slightly in August to 3.1 percent.
