December Jobs Report: Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged

Unemployment Rate Remains steady Second Consecutive Month Steady

For the third month, the U.S. Unemployment Rate remained at the 17-year low of 4.1 percent. Over the year, the number of unemployed has reduced to 926,000 reducing the unemployment rate by 0.6 percent. The average number of jobs created averaged 203,667 per month over the past three months.

Year over Year Wages Continue Rising

Over the past year, average hourly earnings have risen 65 cents (2.5 percent). Average hourly earnings grew 9 cents, bringing the private nonfarm payrolls to $26.63.

Steady Gain of Tech Jobs

The professional and business services sector added 19,000 jobs in December.

The specific areas seeing the most growth in the professional and technical services sector include:

  • Computer systems design and related services (+3,300 jobs in December 2017)
  • Advertising and related services (+2,500 in December 2017)
  • Other professional and technical services (+1,400 jobs in December 2017)

The unemployment rate for professional and technical services dropped in December to 2.8 percent.
