668x200_BlogHeader_RegionalReportThe Bureau of Labor Statistics released their Regional Jobs Report for December earlier this morning and regional and state unemployment rates were little changed from November. However, 42 states and the District of Columbia saw their unemployment rate decrease year-over-year, which bodes well as we get into the full swing of 2016. On another positive note, the IT industry continues to perform well. Since December 2014, 41 states have added IT jobs to their workforce.

In-Depth Look: IT Industry

The IT industry had yet another strong showing in the month of December. The tech sector had an unemployment of 2.5%, which was down a very impressive 0.9% from the month of November. It was also significantly lower than the overall market unemployment rate of 5.0%. Here are the top five states that added the most IT jobs in the month of December:

  • California +15,800 IT jobs added
  • Texas +12,500 IT jobs added
  • Florida +8,400 IT jobs added
  • Virginia +6,800 IT jobs added
  • New Jersey +6,700 IT jobs added

Here are the top five states with the highest IT job growth and the top three states with the highest overall job growth year-over-year:

  • California +124,700 IT jobs and +459,400 total jobs added since December 2014

Year-Over-Year, Regional Unemployment Rates Decline

In December, the Midwest once again had the lowest unemployment rate at 4.7% and the West experienced the highest rate at 5.4%. There was good news for the West, however. The region experienced the greatest unemployment rate decrease from December 2014 to present. While all four regions saw very little month-over-month change in unemployment rates, the year-over-year number showed a positive trend in the right direction. Here’s a look at the regional unemployment figures:

  • Northeast 0% from November to December, -0.8% year-over-year
  • South 0% from November to December, -0.4% year-0ver-year
  • West 0% from November to December, -1.0% year-over-year
