The first Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report of 2017 revealed 227,000 jobs were created in January 2017. A total of 39,000 jobs were created in the professional and business services sector, and the unemployment rate saw little change at 4.8 percent.
Largest Jobs Gain in Four Months
January’s unemployment rate saw a 0.1 percent change to 4.8 percent, with the average number of jobs created per month for the last three months rising to 183,000. The addition of 227,000 jobs is the largest gain of jobs in four months.
Revisions to previous months: The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for November was revised from +204,000 to +164,000, and the change for December was revised from +156,000 to +157,000.
Wages Rise in January
The average hourly wage of U.S. workers saw another increase of three cents to $26.00. This marks a 2.5 percent rise in average hourly wages over the year.
23,000 Tech Jobs Created in January
The professional and business services sector added 39,000 jobs in January. Of these January jobs, professional and technical services created 23,000.
The specific areas seeing the most growth in the professional and technical services sector include:
- Computer systems design and related services (+12,500 jobs in January 2017)
- Other professional and technical services (+8,100 jobs in January 2017)
- Architectural and engineering services (+5,900 in January 2017)
The unemployment rate for professional and technical services was 3.5 percent in January 2017.
