July Jobs Report: Decrease in Tech Unemployment Rate

national jobs reportThe unemployment rate dropped in July, decreasing by 0.1 percent to 4.3 percent. A total of 209,000 jobs were created during the month, 49,000 of which were in the professional and business services sector.

Jobs Growth Continues

The unemployment rate has declined 0.6 percent over the past year, decreasing the number of unemployed by 768,000. During the month of July 209,000 jobs were created, decreasing the unemployment rate by 0.1 percent drop, resulting in a 4.3 percent national unemployment rate. On average the number of jobs created averaged 195,000 per month over the past three months.

Wages Continue to Climb in July

Average hourly earnings have risen 65 cents (2.5 percent), over the past year. The 9 cent raise in July brought the average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls to $26.36.

Steady Gain of Tech Jobs

17,900 jobs were added to the professional and technical services sector in July. In total, the professional and business services sector added 49,000 jobs.

The specific areas seeing the most growth in the professional and technical services sector include:

  • Management and technical consulting services (+7,000 jobs in July 2017)
  • Computer systems design and related services (+4,900 in July 2017)
  • Architectural and engineering services (+3,600 jobs in July 2017)

The unemployment rate for professional and technical services dropped in July to 2.5 percent.
