For the month of December, overall unemployment rates were mostly lower across the regions and states according to the report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning. Unemployment rate decreases from November occurred in forty-two states and the District of Columbia. Continually, 46 states and the District of Columbia noted statistically significant unemployment rate decreases from December 2013.
As the U.S. Unemployment Rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 5.6% in December, 19 states and one major region reported rates lower than the national figure.
Spotlight on December’s State Statistics
In December, the unemployment rate decreased in nineteen states with the most significant being in Delaware (-0.6%), Michigan and North Carolina (-0.4% each). The lowest unemployment rate occurred in North Dakota at 2.8%. Over-the-year, thirty states reported a reduced unemployment rate.
Furthermore, forty-one states saw an increase in employment with the largest of those being as follows:
- Texas +45,700 jobs
- New York +30,400 jobs
- Illinois +17,100 jobs
Regional Unemployment Rate Declines
The Midwest continued its streak of holding the lowest unemployment rate for the eighth straight month with 5.2% in December. The Midwest, Northeast and South saw an unemployment rate decrease of 0.2% while the West noted a 0.1% decrease. The following over-the-year declines in unemployment rates were reported for the regions:
- Midwest -1.6%
- Northeast -1.3%
- West -1.1 %
- South -0.8%
