Top 10 Cyber Monday Sites for IT Geeks

by Modis on November 19, 2012

The term Cyber Monday first came into popularity back in 2005 when coined the term in reference to the increasing Internet sales volume generated by people who were unable to finish their holiday shopping during the extended Thanksgiving weekend, aka Black Friday.  A 2010 survey showed that 70% of Americans who did their gift shopping online did so from their workplace.  (Naughty employees, but nice for online retailers!) Since Monday is the first day back to work for most Americans after the Thanksgiving holiday, Cyber Monday was the natural result of this trend.

Since then, Cyber Monday has only grown, surpassing over $1 billion of sales in 2010.  The trend continues to this day, with many online retailers offering considerable Cyber Monday specials, including Amazon, Target, Newegg, and more!  We’ve listed our top 10 picks for IT professionals and other geeks on Cyber Monday 2012.  Keep an eye on these retailers for amazing deals as the big day approaches!

1.  Amazon

As the leading online retailer in America, it’s no surprise that Amazon takes Cyber Monday very seriously.  Expect major discounts on Amazon Kindles, including the new Kindle Fire, as well as other portable electronics such as iPads, Android Tablets, and more!  Additionally, Amazon has offered considerable discounts on jewelry and designer fashion accessories in previous years, and we expect more of the same in 2012. You know, things for your significant other.

2.  Best Buy

Best Buy has consistently brought substantial deals to Cyber Mondays in years prior, particularly on big ticket items like appliances and televisions.  Coupled with free shipping promotions, these deals are some of the best of the season for home theater aficionados or those who are interested in upgrading to next-generation energy-saving appliances.  In addition to these fantastic deals, however, be on the lookout for deep discounts on MP3 players, digital cameras, audio/video accessories, and more! All work and no play makes us a bit stir crazy…

3.  Walmart

In addition to Walmart’s Black Friday deals, the retailer’s online portal has even more savings in store for Cyber Monday shoppers.  With everything from electronics to home furnishings to toys and clothing, Walmart serves as a “one-stop shop” for many families’ needs.  Expect to see discounts on Walmart’s already low prices for the latest video games, consoles, and laptops, as well as more practical needs like outdoor furniture and home décor.

4.  Target

Target has continued to grow its fan base over the last several decades and continues to do so by offering fantastic Cyber Monday deals online for a wide variety of items.  Target’s Cyber Monday deals tend to be aimed towards name brand electronics, home organization items, furniture, linens, and the company’s signature fashion lines. We’ll be seeing what sort of deals we can find after rummaging through their movie bins on Black Friday!

5.  Newegg

A website for the discerning tech enthusiast, Newegg has long offered some of the best computer hardware deals anywhere.  However, for Cyber Monday, expect Newegg’s “Black November Sale” to get even better!  With blowout sales on everything from laptops and monitors to power supplies and high-end graphics cards, Newegg truly offers a cornucopia of fantastic deals for any tech connoisseur.  Combined with free shipping, extended returns, and price guarantees on many of the hottest items, it’s hard to beat these eggs.

6.  Facebook

While not actually a retailer itself, social media hub Facebook is expected to be a popular site for promoting Cyber Monday deals across a wide variety of merchants.  Many of these deals will come from lesser-known retailers looking to promote their specialties in the hopes of broadening their consumer base.  With Facebook’s incorporation of digital storefronts, merchants from all over the world can easily sell merchandise directly through Facebook itself rather than sending users to a virtual store elsewhere. Make sure you “Like” all of your favorite brands before the big day so you don’t miss out on any exclusive deals.

7.  Wayfair

Wayfair is the largest online retailer of home furnishings and accessories, and has recently completed the addition of a 200,000 sq. ft. warehouse to two of the retailer’s locations in expectation of record sales generated by Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  The retailer expects to expand their product offerings with two-day shipping by 500% this year and anticipates record-breaking sales in the wake of their fantastic holiday promotions. We’re thinking leather desk chairs and a new hardwood office suite would look mighty nice…

8.  Club Med

Internationally famous vacation resort conglomerate Club Med is offering a unique opportunity for Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year.  The company’s website features a list of destinations that visitors can vote for in the days leading up to the event.  After Thanksgiving, Club Med will offer considerable discounts on the top 10 destinations chosen by visitors to the site.  This is a perfect opportunity to shop for the person who has everything and send them on an exotic vacation. I mean, you have to get away from the computer screen sometime, right?

Buy4 is not a retailer itself, but rather a gateway that links to thousands of online retailers and allows users who buy through the Buy4 portal to select a charity which will receive a portion of their purchase value.  This Cyber Monday, Buy4 has announced that it plans to match all donations generated by purchases through the portal, effectively doubling the benefit charities receive from the service during the event.  Using the Buy4 portal is no more expensive than going directly to the retailer’s site itself, so there is little incentive not to take the opportunity to amplify your generosity and help those in need.

Cyber Mondays at Overstock have historically been full of fantastic savings on already-discounted merchandise and there is no reason to expect 2012 will be any different.  The website offers a Cyber Monday countdown ticker that implies savings are just around the corner, but they’re remaining quiet about what those deals might be for the time being.  (We’ve signed an NDA or two like that. Haven’t you?) Regardless of the nature of the holiday specials, any savings on top of Overstock’s everyday low prices are sure to be phenomenal.
