Tablet Wars – location, location, location

Apple rules! No wait, Android rules! While nearly everyone has an opinion on this (unless you are Rip Van Winkle and have been asleep for years), what seems to matter when determining your buying preferences is your location.

A recent study from IDG Connect shows more first time buyers will opt for Android tablets over the next year, especially buyers in developing countries.  It’s the probable choice for future buyers in Africa and in Europe.  Preference for the Android polled lowest in North America and Australia/New Zealand.

For the North American crowd, Apple is proving to be the tablet maker of choice. Market research firm IDC backs this up by predicting that Apple’s share of the market will increase to 62.5 percent, up from 58.1 percent in 2011.  Some of this growth can be attributed to new features of the iPad 3 as well as the decision to continue to sell versions of iPad 2 at a lower price point.

Although struggling Blackberry maker Research in Motion has its PlayBook tablet, it appears to be losing ground and market share is expected to drop to 1 percent this year.

The release of Windows 8 operating system from Microsoft could affect the tablet market by increasing sales of devices that run the platform. This new OS allows touchscreen capabilities and will run on non-x86 systems like those powered by system-on-a-chip architectures.

The good news is that you have choices, no matter your location!
