While recruiters may go out to meet a consultant or potential candidate, it’s usually at a quiet coffee shop. The focus is typically around having a constructive, down-to-earth conversation — this is so that the recruiter can understand the career aspirations of the other person.
No, we’re not out drinking. No, we don’t have endless streams of energy — and especially no, we’re not 22 at heart. What we want is to make it as comfortable and ‘non awkward’ as possible so that our candidate can comfortably explain what he or she is looking for in a career.
2. What My Parents Think I Do
The term ‘head-hunting’ — for some reason — is a popular term that older generations will throw around. While we’re not completely sure where the concept actually came from, we do know what it means — and we don’t like it.
The term ‘headhunting’ describes a practice of aggressively, and sometimes unethically, sourcing talent for the sake of a commission or making a placement.
In actuality, it describes an outdated recruiting process that is shortsighted, spammy and downright annoying for the candidate.
The truth is, recruiting is a field heavily dependent on relationships. At the end of the day, we’re matchmakers who are committed to helping talented professionals find their dream jobs. We’re not headhunting — we’re getting to know our clients and talent on a deeply personal level.
3. What Society Thinks I Do
Society thinks that recruiters sit back and idly wait for inbound resumes to make their way across our desks, looking to make an immediate placement as quickly as possible.
Not so much.
We spend more time strategizing than we do sourcing. We spend a lot of time understanding the traits of top talent so that we can find amazing contributors.
To that end, we’re actively sourcing potential candidates on platforms like LinkedIn and Github. We’re out there —but most of the time, we’re carefully studying hiring and market trends.
4. What My Team Members Think I Do
If there’s an open role within a company, it’s easy to assume that the ‘perfect’ job application will trickle in — way too easy. The fact is, recruiters work hard to build a pipeline of passive, qualified talent.
That’s because top candidates aren’t looking for work — they’re happy in their current roles.
Recruiters aren’t waiting for resumes to simply ‘come in’ — they’re out building relationships and learning as much as they possibly can about the talent ecosystem within their industries. Recruiters are more than talent staffers — they’re connectors who are constantly seeking out the best people for your business’s next stage.
5. What I Think I Do
As a recruiter — more often than not — you’re focused on what’s right in front of you: a handful of open roles that need your immediate attention. In your mind, your role is one that supports your client’s growth objectives — you help find candidates to help build upon your client’s unique vision.
